Night Fishing For Bass

Reading Time: 4 minutes

When I was a teenager and didn’t have a job or college I loved to night fish.  Night fishing is an entirely different beast and can be very fun.  We will dive in a little bit on what to use, what to look for, and what other key elements you want to remember to bring with you.

One of the most important  thing to remember is that bass rely less on sight and more on feel at this point.  So vibration is key when night fishing.  In fact when I night fish I almost exclusively power fish.  This means that I will mainly throw moving baits like spinner baits, top water, and crank baits to name a few.

As far as top waters go I love to throw prop baits at night such as Buzz Baits.  I actually prefer the tri-wing buzz bait which has three wings on the prop.  It is a little more subtle in my opinion. I also always pair this with a trailer hook because of some of the short strikes or misses.  Remember it is night time for the fish also so they will blow up and miss a lot on the bait.  It is also important to remember that black is an excellent color for night time fishing.  In fact I use almost exclusively a black skirt on my buzz baits and spinner baits.  I am not sure why this is but it just flat out works.

Speaking of spinner baits…..throw them….with a Colorado blade of course. Spotsticker baits makes an excellent “Night Time” Spinner Bait and it has a big Colorado blade that cause a lot of vibration.  It actually only comes in dark colors so I must be on to something here.  Again make sure to pair it with a trailer hook.

As far as crank baits go I prefer a square bill.  The action is a little more erratic and I feel it draws more attention for that crushing night time bite. Livingston Lures makes an excellent crank bait and they have a patented technology that makes bait fish sounds under the water.

Where to fish in a pond!!!

So if I am pond fishing I am going to walk the edges of the bank and make casts parallel to the bank.  I will work different depths to see where the fish are holding.  Just stay as quiet as possible and have a head lamp.

Where to Night fish on a Lake!!

First and foremost I am not an advocate for night fishing in a public lake because I feel it is dangerous.  However if you chose to do so then be vary careful and have plenty of lights on your boat and someone with you.  I would even recommend have a spotlight on while driving that the passenger holds up and scans left to right while you are driving.  Now that I am done with my safety disclaimer I would say focus on finding light.  In lakes the bait fish will school up under the lights on boat docks or marinas.  And if you get lucky enough to find a dock with one of those green monster lights underneath it then cast over it and hold on.

Be safe out there and if you are planning on going fishing here are some Night fishing accessories you can’t go with out.
